“I just received a positive COVID-19 test result after being locked in a secure room on Capitol Hill where several Republicans not only cruelly refused to wear a mask, but recklessly mocked colleagues and staff who they offered one, “he said.
“Just hours after Trump incited a deadly assault on our Capitol, many Republicans still refused to take even the slightest bit of COVID-19 precaution and just wear a fucking mask in a room full of people during a pandemic, creating an event of super spread OVER a national terrorist attack.
“Any MP who refuses to wear a mask must be fully responsible for endangering our lives due to their selfish idiocy.
“I am asking that all members who refuse to wear a mask in the Capitol be fined and removed from the floor by the Sergeant at Arms.”
He is currently in isolation on the advice of the congressional doctor.
“I share the outrage and anger of those across the United States who have seen Trump fail to fight this terrible pandemic and refuse to care for Americans who are suffering, dying and devastated,” he said.
“I will not rest until I do everything in my power to remove this president from office.”
He has not said if he is experiencing symptoms of the disease.
Ms. Jayapal recently had a knee replacement and is using a cane.
Members were taken to a secure room after protesters stormed the building.
In a video posted shortly thereafter, Democratic Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester of Delaware is seen offering masks to her uncovered Republican colleagues.
Republicans reject his offer.
The following day, Ms Jayapal gave an interview to The Cut in which she said that she had pre-emptively quarantined.
“I am in quarantine now because I am convinced that the place where we ended up, in the secured room, where there were more than 100 people and many were Republicans without masks, was a highly publicized event,” she said.
Ms. Jayapal is known to be one of the most progressive members of the House of Representatives.
She is the second member of Congress to test positive after the riot.
New Jersey Democrat Bonnie Watson Coleman tested positive this morning.
“After the events on Wednesday, including the shelter with several colleagues who refused to wear masks, I decided to do a Covid test,” he wrote on Twitter.
“I am resting at home at the moment. While I am experiencing mild, cold-like symptoms, I remain in good spirits and will continue to work on behalf of my constituents.”
