The new director of the National Fund for the Promotion of Tourism (Fonatur), Javier May Rodríguez, will manage this year the largest budget that the federal government has assigned to the Mayan Train: 62,942.1 million pesos (39% of the current total cost), with which The aim is to accelerate its construction to meet the presidential instruction to finish it by the end of 2023.

In addition, he will be in charge of justifying the various changes made and those that are missing in the main infrastructure project of the current six-year term, including the recent expropriation of land by Sedatu, despite the fact that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said in October 2018 that this was not going to happen in any small property or in any ejido.

“Along the train tracks, 100,000 hectares of fruit and timber trees are going to be planted,” he explained at the time.

Reality has set in. Basically, there is already pressure because the work is not progressing as planned with the argument of Covid-19 and the hurricanes. To date there is a physical progress close to 10 percent.

“It was launched without having all the required documentation. There was not an intense planning phase as it should be, between two and three years before putting in a shovel. We see that 1,000 chipotes have left the train and that the work is delayed, from what we can see”, considered the director of the Mexican Institute for Infrastructure Development (Imexdi), Edmundo Gamas.

The surprising departure of Rogelio Jiménez Pons from Fonatur gave way to Javier May Rodríguez, former Secretary of Welfare, whom the Federal Secretary of Tourism, Miguel Torruco, identified as his “good friend” with whom he will work hand in hand to consolidate the Mayan Train. .

The movement generated multiple readings, one of them was made by the executive director of Mexican Transparency, Eduardo Bohórquez, who has closely followed the development of various infrastructure projects in the country.

“The president has been understanding that the project is not socially accepted in the region, that the communities are irritated by the sloppiness in the consultations and the tendentious handling of the information. It is a change of direction to try to give a greater social meaning to the project and improve communication with the communities”, he explained.

The arrival of the Sedena

This year, engineers from the Secretary of National Defense (Sedena) will arrive in the area of ​​the Mayan Train to take charge of the construction of a segment of Section 5, sections 6 and 7, with which the 1,500 kilometers of the work will already be under construction.

In support of the task of the new head of Fonatur, who is also days away from meeting with the private construction companies that work on sections 1,2,3 and 4, is the company Mextypsa, which was hired in 2019 to advise on the structuring of the entire project, the basic engineering and its supervision.

“It is difficult for the train to be delivered completely on the date that was promised due to the technical issues that are appreciated, despite having the required budget,” said the director of Imexdi.
