The Climate Change Law will oblige all cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants to delimit a Low Emissions Zone in its urban area before the next year 2023. Every year, air pollution causes almost 30,000 premature deaths in Spain. In this sense, the main cause of atmospheric pollution in cities is traffic, in addition to road transport, which is also responsible for 29 percent of CO2 emissions, the main gas that causes what is known as the greenhouse effect.

The Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB) Together with the municipalities of Cornellà de Llobregat, Esplugues de Llobregat, L’Hospitalet de Llobregat and Sant Adrià del Besòs, it has a Low Own Emissions Zone (ZBE). This has reduced more than 50% the number of vehicles circulating without an environmental label in the last year. In addition, the new Low Emissions Zone of Madrid, by which some vehicles with label A will not be able to circulate inside the M-30, has entered into force this past Saturday, January 1.

Will regulate entry into the ZBE

In this sense, the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge is already working on Guidelines for the establishment of LEZs that will facilitate their development within the framework of the provisions of the Law. Among them, the General Directorate of Traffic will introduce a new vertical sign to identify Low Emission Zones. The sign informs that motor vehicles are prohibited from entering, except for those vehicles that have the environmental label indicated by the local entity at the bottom of the sign.

This is made up, on the one hand, of a red circle that indicates prohibition according to our highway code. On its white background, an infographic is incorporated that represents the shape of a vehicle that is emitting greenhouse gases. In addition, in its lower part a strip is added in which the municipality in question must indicate which vehicles are prohibited from passing whether or not they have a certain environmental label.

The DGT (General Directorate of Traffic) since last year 2020 introduced a new system that identified the degree of polluting emissions made by a vehicle. In this line, there are currently four types of environmental labels: B, C, Environmental Eco and Environmental 0. The first of these, yellow, identifies old diesel and gasoline vehicles. The green C represents modern diesel and gasoline. The Eco, blue and green, signals hybrids. Finally, the blue 0 is for 100% electric vehicles.
