Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said Tuesday that he planned to impose a state of near-emergency, meaning tighter COVID-19 restrictions on dining and gatherings, in 13 regions including Tokyo from Jan. 21 to Jan. 13. February.
He said the government had stopped a program in which those vaccinated or with negative test results would be exempt from coronavirus restrictions as cases of the virus rose.
