Mexico registered 33,308 intentional homicides in 2021, a figure 3.6% lower than that of the murders registered the previous year, according to official figures released this Thursday.

The 2021 data achieved a small improvement compared to the 34,554 homicides recorded in 2020. In 2019 there was a record with 34,690 homicide victims, the highest number since 1997, when those records began

The states that accounted for more than 50% of these figures were:

  • Guanajuato
  • Mexico state
  • Lower California
  • Chihuahua
  • Jalisco
  • Michoacan

“In relation to intentional homicide, already with the figures, we have a downward trend,” said the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, at the morning conference. The official added that since the beginning of the administration of the president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador there has been a 4% reduction in intentional homicides.

Mexico is experiencing a wave of violence linked to the organized crime since 2006, when the government of the then president Felipe Calderon ordered a controversial anti-drug operation, with the active participation of military personnel.

Since then, the country has registered more than 300,000 murders, attributed mostly to organizations dedicated to multiple crimes such as drug trafficking, arms smuggling, kidnapping, extortion, migrant smuggling and the fuel theft —known as “huachicol”—.

The Secretary of Public Security said Thursday that some of these crimes have been on the rise.

“The passerby robbery, individual public transport robbery, extortion Y violation These are crimes that have been on the rise and where we need to improve the work and the results in these common law crimes,” he said.

López Obrador came to the presidency in 2018 promising to pacify the country. His biggest bet was the creation of the National Guard, a security group mainly composed of the military and the delivery of social supports to attack what he calls “the causes of violence”.

From the opposition, the president had been critical of the military strategy against the drug cartels, although already in the presidency he has multiplied the participation of the Armed forces in security tasks.

Despite this display, scenes of violence are daily in various parts of the country, such as in the state of Zacatecas, where at the end of last year several hanging bodies or various armed attacks were found in Michoacán.
