Georgia Stanway says she was pleased to break Manchester City’s scoring record after scoring a hat-trick in their FA Women’s Cup fourth round victory against Nottingham Forest.
Stanway came off the bench to score a second-half hat-trick in an 8-0 victory, taking his tally to 64 goals to surpass Nikita Parris’ mark of 62.
“I knew it was possible,” Stanway told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“As soon as I walked in, it was on my mind.”
Goals from Caroline Weir, Khadija Shaw and Filippa Angeldahl had made the result against third-tier Forest beyond doubt before half-time.
Stanway then contributed a record hat-trick, while Shaw notched another and Lauren Hemp added to the loss at the City Ground.
Goalkeeper Ellie Roebuck, making her first appearance of the season, was untroubled on her return from a calf injury.
While it wasn’t necessary to make a save, Roebuck’s presence, following his long stint on the sidelines, was another big boost for a team that struggled in the absence of several big names earlier in the season.
Three-time cup winners City dominated throughout, controlling 81% of possession against the NL Northern Premier team.
The hosts chased play almost immediately, with Weir putting City ahead after just two minutes.
Shaw and Angeldahl increased the lead before the break to put City firmly in control.
Substitute Stanway scored with her first shot on goal to equal the club goalscoring record in the 50th minute, then broke it after Hemp scored a fifth goal for the visitors.
The England international then added to the new mark in stoppage time after Shaw earned a second.
“It was a good day overall,” Stanway said.
“I put myself under a bit of pressure. I knew it was something I wanted to achieve before the end of the season, but luckily I was in good shape and scored a few until today.”
“This is the game I wanted to get branded. The first put me on a good front foot.
“If I can score as many goals for City, if I can make an impact, whether it’s goals or assists, game-changing moments or tackles, I will do everything I can for this team.”
