The accumulated of Covid-19 infections in Mexico amounted to 4 million 942,590, after 962,867 confirmed cases of the virus were reported during January 2022 coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, the highest record of monthly infections since the pandemic began in the country in February 2020, according to data from the Ministry of Health.

This Monday, federal authorities reported 12,521 new infections in the last 24 hours.

The rapid increase in Covid-19 infections recorded at the beginning of the year was attributed to a greater extent to the presence of the Omicron variant.

Meanwhile, the official number of deaths from Covid-19 in Mexico increased to 306,091 deaths, after 198 new deaths were reported on January 31. During the first month of the year, the federal agency reported 6,663 deaths.

In the framework of the fourth wave of Covid-19 that the country is facing, the rate of deaths has been lower than that of infections. The number of deaths registered in January 2022 was similar to that reported in May 2021, when 6,661 deceased persons were reported. It is the fifth month with the lowest number of deaths in the pandemic.

On average during January, 167 daily deaths were registered in Mexico due to the new coronavirus.

According to the daily technical report on the progress of the epidemic in the country, health authorities estimate 230,308 active cases, that is, people who have presented Covid-19 symptoms in the last 14 days.

Last week, the Undersecretary for Prevention and Health Promotion, Hugo López-Gatell, estimated that the epidemic curve was showing a downward trend in infections and stressed that despite the rebound recorded in January, it had not been reflected in a saturation in hospitals, nor in the substantial increase in deaths.

The expert attributed this behavior of the epidemic to the advance of the vaccination against Covid-19.

At the national level, the occupancy of general beds stands at 47%, two percentage points more than what was reported yesterday; while the beds with a ventilator for the care of serious Covid-19 patients register an occupancy of 29 percent.

The federal government highlights that of the 83 million 620,573 people inoculated against Covid-19, 77 million 159,476 have the complete vaccination scheme.
