Cancun, QR. The secretary of Municipal Planning and Sustainability of Solidaridad, Teresita del Niño Jesús Flota Alcocer, confirmed that the new route of the Mayan Train through Playa del Carmen will be through the Peripheral Ring foreseen in the Municipal Urban Development Plan, 8 kilometers from the road 307.

This line had been insistently proposed to the National Fund for the Promotion of Tourism (Fonatur) and President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, even before the train works began, which were ultimately canceled at the center of Highway 307 to avoid complications. roads and future risks due to the karstic soil of that area.

“There are already topographic works to the west of Playa del Carmen. On Luis Donaldo Colosio Avenue, where the exit to the highway to Yucatan is, there is a crossroads where the Playa del Carmen peripheral will be in the future, but where the Mayan Train will currently pass,” explained the official.

The road will cross the Villas del Sol subdivision, whose developer left a 92-meter-wide strip free because for more than 10 years it was already planned that a suburban passenger train would circulate there.

“Work is already being carried out by surveyors from UNAM, to cross-reference their information with the data we have at the local level and to be able to have a final surveyed and referenced line very soon, which can be made known to the community through through our municipal president, Lili Campos, and the general director of Fonatur, Javier May”, added Flota Alcocer.

In addition to this, it was announced that they are proposing to rehabilitate the central median of the highway that crosses downtown Playa del Carmen, on which the works of the Mayan Train had already been advanced for several months, which had to be canceled two weeks ago due to the change of stroke.

This will mean replanting trees like those that Fonatur “rescued” months ago to clear the ridge through which the railway will no longer run.

“We are going to be working together with the federal government to recover the median, we are going to reinstall lighting, for pedestrian safety and we are also going to reforest that area,” explained the secretary.

Mayor Lili Campos said that they will seek to make that median a tourist boulevard, rehabilitating and improving the entire strip impacted by the canceled works of the Mayan Train.

point of agreement

Last weekend, councilor Marciano Toledo Sánchez announced that he will promote a point of agreement in the Cabildo de Solidaridad to request that administrative and criminal responsibilities be established against the former director of the National Fund for the Promotion of Tourism, Rogelio Jiménez Pons, for waste of public resources and violating municipal autonomy in the ill-fated stretch of Section 5 of the Mayan Train.

This agreement will require that the city council be taken into account from now on in all decisions related to the new layout of the railway, which is about to be announced by the new head of Fonatur, Javier May Rodríguez.

In addition, they will request that the central median be rehabilitated with reforestation works and that the planting of trees be extended throughout the entire length of the Playa del Carmen-Cancún corridor.

The councilman assured that the works canceled at the center of highway 307 implied an unnecessary expense of 500 million pesos, in addition to the removal of more than 20,000 trees from the central median, of which it is not known what purpose they had.
