THE Great Synagogue hosted newly elected City of Sydney councillors for a Friday night service followed by a traditional Shabbat dinner on March 25.
Hosted by president of the Great Synagogue David Lewis, and Chief Rabbi Dr Benjamin Elton, the dinner brought together local councillors from the City of Sydney, with the aim of deepening the understanding between the council and the Jewish community and encouraging interfaith dialogue.
“This was a great opportunity to put the issues facing our community to newly elected councillors,” said Rabbi Elton.
“We are the leading synagogue in the City of Sydney so it’s important that we engage with all our elected representatives and also with other faith groups based in the city.”
Lewis said, “We occupy a very special space as the custodians of a magnificent building.
“Our close to 800 members expect us to lobby for the support of the City of Sydney to maintain this building as well as promote the interests of the Jewish community at a local government level.”
